description_en: Genus of about 20 species of mostly epiphytic, perennial cacti occurring mainly in rainforest from S. Mexico to Argentina, and also in the West Indies. The strap-shaped, cylindrical, flattened, often deeply toothed, fleshy green stems and branches become 2-ribbed when mature, and bear small, usually spineless areoles. The mainly funnel-shaped flowers, 8-30cm (3-12in) long, are often sweetly scented and last for 2 or more days; many are nocturnal. In areas where temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F), grow as houseplants or in a warm greenhouse. In warmer climates, plant in a shaded courtyard.
hardiness_en: Frost tender. They require a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F) for most of the year but, for successful cultivation, the temperature should be increased to 15°C (59°F) in early spring.

propagation_en: Sow seed at 21°C (70°F) in spring or early summer. Take stem cuttings in early summer.
