Description en: Genus of about 56 species of sturdy, aromatic, tufted, evergreen, perennial grasses, occurring in warm-temperate, subtropical, and tropical Africa and Asia, often in savannah grassland. They are grown for their linear to lance-shaped, mid- to bluish green leaves, and their loose or compact, many-branched flowering panicles, borne at the ends of the branches. The panicles consist of spikelets borne in short, paired, spike-like racemes, which are enclosed in spathe-like bracts. In frost-prone areas, grow in a conservatory or warm greenhouse and move outdoors in summer; in warmer climates, use in a mixed or grass border. Cymbopogon species contain essential oils that have medicinal, culinary, and cosmetic uses.
