説明（英語）: Genus of 80-90 species of hairless, climbing, trailing, or bushy annuals and herbaceous perennials, many with tuberous roots, found mainly in cool, mountainous areas in Central and South America. The alternate, rounded, peltate leaves are entire or palmately lobed to palmate with 5-7 lobes or leaflets; they have long leaf-stalks, which are used as the method of attachment in climbing species. Roughly funnel-shaped flowers, with 5 showy, clawed petals, often with prominent spurs, and 5 inconspicuous, pointed sepals, are borne singly from the leaf axils. Grow climbing tropaeolums over a fence, trellis, pergola, or non-flowering shrub, or allow to trail on a bank or dry wall. T. polyphyllum is suitable for a raised or scree bed, or a large rock garden. The dwarf, bushy T. majus hybrids and cultivars are effective in an annual bed or border; the trailing or semi-trailing variants are excellent for hanging baskets or other containers. In frost-prone areas, grow tender perennials in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. The leaves and flowers of annual tropaeolums are edible, and the young fruits of T. majus can be pickled.

繁殖（英語）: Sow seed of annuals at 13-16°C (55-61°F) in early spring or in situ in mid-spring. Sow seed of perennials in containers in a cold frame as soon as ripe; germination is often erratic. Separate tubers in autumn, when dormant. Divide T. speciosum carefully in early spring. Insert stem-tip cuttings in late summer with bottom heat. Root basal or stem-tip cuttings of selected cultivars, such as T. majus ’Hermine Grasshoff’, in spring or early summer.

病害虫（英語）: Caterpillars of cabbage white butterflies, flea beetles, black fly, and slugs may be troublesome. T. majus and its hybrids and cultivars are susceptible to whiteflies and viruses.
