落葉灌木で、紫色の小さい実を多く付ける。日本に広く分布するが、野生のものは非常にまれで、よく見かけるのは近縁のムラサキシキブやヤブムラサキである。観賞植物としては一般的で、ムラサキシキブ属で最も栽培される種である。
