カンアオイ属に近縁の多年草で、葉も似ているが毛が多い。４月ごろに黄色の花をつける。カンアオイ属は花弁がなく、がくのみがあるが、サルマは緑色のがくと黄色の花弁をもつ。雌ずい先熟による弱い自家不和合性があるが、自花粉で結実し、こぼれ種でよく増える。サルマ属は本種１種のみ。
