耐寒性の秋植え球根で、ムスカリ属で最も栽培されている種。葉は線形で長さ30cm、冬の間に伸びるので、寒さが厳しい年は開花時に先端が枯れていることもある。4月に高さ20cmの花茎を伸ばし、青紫色の小花を穂状花序につける。小花の先端は白い縁取りがあることが多い。白、ピンクなどの品種がある。青色がないチューリップやスイセンと同時期に咲くので、混植されることが多い。
