つる性の一年草。9〜10月に咲く開放花は総状花序につき、旗弁は紫色。翼弁と竜骨弁は白っぽく、あまり結実しない。おもに閉鎖花につく豆果はいかにもマメ科という形で、３個ほどの種子がある。地下にも閉鎖花をつけ、種子が１つだけ入った果実になる。この地下の種子は地上のものより大きく、食用とする。
