大型の一年草で、高さ1〜2mになる。8〜11月にイヌタデを大きくしたような花序をつける。花は紅紫色〜桃色（まれに白）で、タデ科の特徴として花弁はなく、がくが着色し、果実が肥大してもがくがそのまま残るので、花序が長く観賞できる。
