長く伸びる地下茎をもつ宿根草で、高さ40〜100cmになる。8〜11月に白い花を総状花序につける。タデ科の特徴として花弁はなく、がくが白く目立つ。ソバなどと同様に異型花柱花型の自家不和合性があり、花柱の長さが異なる個体間の交配でのみ種子をつける。イヌタデ属は数種が山野草として栽培されるほかはオオケタデくらいしか栽培されないが、園芸的にはもっと利用されてよい。
